ValueSet Type Examples

ValueSet Type 4 - Enter values into symbols on the schedule
A Symbol ValueSet lets you add values to symbols and then use those in calculations and Datagraphs.

Here's an example that shows how symbol ValueSets might be used.  The example tracks shipments of four products over 3 months.  Each product is represented by a different colored symbol.

Four separate symbol ValueSets are used, one for each product.  A numeric value is entered for each symbol.  Also, a Summary ValueSet is used to add up the shipments (it is shown at the bottom of the schedule as Total Units Shipped).

Example 2:

The schedule below has 3 symbol ValueSets to track employee attendance.

One ValueSet is used to track sick days, one is used to track work days and one is used to track vacation days. Each symbol on the schedule has a value of 1.  They only needed to be entered once and then were copied on the schedule using the CTRL+select keyboard shortcut.

The SmartColumns are set to "ValueSet" SmartColumns and automatically add up the values in the Symbol ValueSet, which are also displayed in the DataGraph below the schedule.

Example 3:

The schedule below has one symbol ValueSet to track the cost of repairing machines in different buildings.  The values are entered for each symbol.  They are summed in the "Cost" SmartColumn (by row) and the values are summed by month at the bottom of the schedule:

Set Up

Choose Format | DataGraph | Setup ValueSets, and select "Type 4" as the Data Source:

Once this type of ValueSet is defined you can then use the "ValueSets" tab in the Symbol Properties dialog to attach values to a symbol. In the value entry screen, only Type 4 ValueSets are available for data entry:

Milestones Professional totals the values attached to the symbols in each time period and uses this as the value to display.

To display the value above the symbol, include &vs# (where # is the ValueSet number) in the symbol text.  For example, to reference the first ValueSet, use "&vs1."  Put this text string anywhere in the symbol text to have the value shown.

Example: Values are attached to symbols. Those values graph in the time period the symbol appears in.
